Chapter Seventeen
On the Way to Baltasound
The great Lion has a menacing stare,
And a mane of such glorious hair.
Yet his cavernous jaws
Should not cause you to pause.
When he eats, he just wants his fair share.
Maury: I’m Back!
Situation Report: A Land Rover and a flatbed lorry sat waiting in the driveway. Bearbi and her crew were piling into the SUV. Clarence was driving. Lepi and Otto were sitting in the cab of the truck with Dougal. I was going to ride in the back with Octavius. We had some of the photo crew’s equipment loaded in with us. Uncomfortable.
Estimated Time of Departure: Shortly.
We had just completed a second inspection of the two vehicles - brakes and brake lines, tires, looking for strange stuff under the chassis, loose anythings, unnecessary or unfamiliar items in the engine compartments, under the seats etc. Dougal had gone through the whole routine half an hour earlier. He found nothing. We found nothing. Proves nothing!
There had been some discussion as to whether I should ride with Dame Bearbara, but there was no room in the Land Rover even for someone my size. I, of course, was going to act as intermediary between Bearbi and her band of paparazzi and the gentle folk at the pub. I was reasonably sure that Lion and Unicorn for all their bluster, would love the publicity, especially being able to reenact their famous fight on video and for magazine stills. I was less certain what the reaction of the offshore wildcats would be, and I wanted to keep the groups as far apart as possible. Octavius, Chita, Lepi, Otto and I wanted to glean as much information as they were willing to give us without interruption or getting them ticked off. We had decided that we would not mention our suspicions that the castle might be the focus of all these problems and attacks. We didn’t want a vengeful mob trying to burn the place down. Shades of Frankenstag, the deranged doctor deer and his monster moose.
Chita had decided to come with us but since neither vehicle would be setting any speed records, she decided to lope along on the ground as we went. I wasn’t sure whether she was just trying to keep her hide in one piece if anything should happen to the truck, or whether she planned to do a little scouting of the terrain as we went. Possibly both.
I had been trying to make some sense out of that cat for quite a while and then it occurred to me. She probably doesn’t make sense to herself. A beautiful face, spectacular legs, ferocious teeth and a towering IQ brain all attached to an agile, high performance body, but under the control (maybe) of a hair trigger, whirlwind response nerve center. Tough, but touchy and often single-minded to the point of disaster. Easy to like but, oh boy, even easier to hate. Anyhow, there she
